WHAT IS SUNSHINE CLUB?
Bringing Sunshine to Seniors Across Our Community
The Sunshine Club is a vibrant seniors initiative under the auspices of Chabad on the Avenue, dedicated to bringing connection, friendship, Jewish meaning and joy into the lives of seniors throughout our community.
Through several different arms of the Sunshine Club, we create opportunities for seniors to learn, celebrate, build friendships and stay meaningfully connected to the generations around them.
PROGRAMS & CLASSES FOR SENIORS
One important part of the Sunshine Club is our programming at retirement residences, independent senior living communities and other locations throughout Toronto.
We bring engaging Jewish experiences directly to seniors through interactive classes and discussions, holiday celebrations, creative activities, art, challah baking and special events.
Our classes explore timeless Jewish wisdom, Torah personalities, traditions and relevant topics in a warm and engaging environment. Conversation is at the heart of what we do, giving participants the opportunity to share their own thoughts, memories, experiences and wisdom.
Throughout the year, we also celebrate the Jewish calendar together, bringing the warmth, traditions and joy of each holiday directly to our seniors and creating special moments to anticipate and enjoy.
INTERGENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS
Some of our most meaningful moments happen when generations come together. Through special intergenerational programs with the children of Gan Shalom Preschool, our seniors have the opportunity to connect with young children through visits, holiday celebrations, activities, music and shared experiences.
These encounters bring tremendous joy to both generations — giving children the opportunity to learn from and connect with their elders while giving seniors the warmth and energy that only little visitors can bring.
VOLUNTEER & FRIENDSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
The Sunshine Club also connects caring volunteers with local seniors for friendship and companionship. Through regular visits and meaningful time spent together, volunteers and seniors form genuine relationships built on conversation, caring and connection.
Whether through our classes, celebrations, intergenerational experiences or volunteer visits, everything we do shares one goal: to ensure that seniors feel connected, valued and an important part of our Jewish community.
Together, we learn, celebrate, connect and bring a little more sunshine into every day.
Volunteer
The beauty of volunteering is that even a small investment of time can make an incredible difference. A friendly face and a listening ear can brighten a senior’s week, ease loneliness and help ensure that the Bubbies and Zadies who have given so much throughout their lives enjoy their senior years with the dignity, respect, connection and appreciation they deserve.
And the gift goes both ways. Our volunteers have the unique opportunity to form genuine friendships and learn from a generation filled with wisdom, experience and incredible stories.
Volunteers must be 15 years of age or older. Married couples are welcome to visit together and may bring their children when appropriate. Volunteers receive an initial orientation and are thoughtfully matched with a senior friend, with ongoing support from our Sunshine Club team.
It’s more than a visit. It’s friendship, connection and community — and a chance to bring a little more sunshine into someone’s life.
